“The beginning of wisdom is: Get [skillful and godly] wisdom [it is preeminent]!

And with all your acquiring, get understanding

[actively seek spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation].”

Proverbs 4:7 Amplified Version

Are there some verses in the Bible that you feel like you don’t just quite get? Or have you always recited the seemingly “popular” verses from the Bible but they just roll off your tongue like any other word? Whenever there’s a disconnect with the Word of God, and our hearts, it’s probably because we lack understanding.

And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading? And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

Acts 8:29-32 ESV

In the New Testament, we see here Philip, a disciple of Jesus Christ, was led by the Holy Spirit to talk to a man reading the Book of Isaiah. Philip asked if he understood what he was reading, and he didn’t! He needed someone to guide him as he read the scriptures, and so Philip did just that. (note: You HAVE to read what happened with Philip after this encounter!!!!!!)

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

John 16:13 ESV

The Holy Spirit, our helper, is the one who guides us into all truth. Because the Words of Jesus are truth, the Holy Spirit will always guide us to His Word!!

Sanctify them by Your truth.

Your word is truth.

John 17:17 NKJV

Reader, you neeeeed the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Our Lord Jesus sent us a helper, this precious Holy Spirit to help us while we read the scriptures. If you find it hard to read the Word of God, pray before each encounter with the scriptures: Ask the Lord to open your eyes and to enlighten you to understand His Word.

The word of God tells us that for a lack of knowledge, people would perish! What a terrible thing it would be to have the words of life in our hands, at our fingertips, and in our minds, and not have an understanding of it in our hearts.

The next time you read your Bible, do not read it as a book. Do not take this Word for granted and skim over it or give it no thought in your mind when you say a scripture. Take it in, and ask the Holy Spirit for understanding and a revelation. He will surely open your eyes to the level that will help you to stand firm in His Word that never fails.

Recently, I was reminded of the verse:
“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
Romans 5:8
I have always heard of this verse, and have probably recited it here and there.
But truly, deep down, I didn’t know what this meant. So I sought the Lord. I asked Him for understanding.
Right there I was directed to other bible verses in Eph. 2:4-5, then in His mercy, the Holy Spirit even gave
me an analogy to help clarify the verse.
It was a beautiful moment in His presence, because the weight of salvation was shown to me.
As you give room for God to lead you in reading His Word, He will do it through the Power of His Holy Spirit!
