There are so many names for our Father in Heaven. Some call Him Jehovah Jireh, the Provider, or Wonderful Counselor, Mighty Warrior, the Prince of Peace, our Emmanuel, and so on.
One day in prayer I asked God: What name do I call you this season? In my heart I was asking what part of You do I need to know the most. He told Me: Abba, Father. Later on in the day I realized that it was actually Father’s Day! How sweet, loving and kind is our God? The Holy Spirit’s job is to put us in remembrance of all that God has told us, and it is only by the Spirit of God that we are able to understand and acknowledge God as Abba, Father.
And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”
Galatians 4:6 NLT
Only three times is the word Abba Father used in the Bible. in the verse above, in Mark 14:36 and again in Romans 8:15. Every time this word is used, it is to convey a closeness with God. It literally translates to ‘Father, my Father’. This is a different use of the word Father than we see in the Old Testament or in Matthew 6 when Jesus shows his disciples how to pray. The word Abba is only used in the New Testament, which solidifies the verses in Galatians 4:6 and Romans 8:15.. because the Holy Spirit now dwells in us as part of the new covenant, we testify of the nearness of God, and can see His Fatherhood in a new light.
And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough. But you have received the “Spirit of full acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection,
“Beloved Father!”
For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, “You are God’s beloved child!”
Romans 8:15-16 TPT
So, when we come to God, we must come like a child. Picture in your mind you as a little girl or boy, who is anxiously looking around, not content until you see your father, and when you do, you run as fast as you can to them, ready to commune, listen to, trust and love on your Dad.
I really desire to understand the goodness of the Father, and I pray you do too. Even though we don’t see Him, we know His love, His works, His greatness and grandeur through His creation. This great God has made Himself known to us as Abba, Father. What a privilege. Even to write about Him, and to speak to Him! To pray to Him! To know Him! Be grateful everyday to serve a God like this, and moreover, that He sees you as His beloved child.
