Revival comes with understanding. When there’s an understanding of who you’re worshipping, who you’re called to be, of your true identity, you walk differently and with a confident hope in Christ. Your praise looks different, and your prayers are now from a place of knowing.

Understanding: God-given perception of the nature and meaning of things, resulting in sound judgment and decision-making; in particular the ability to discern spiritual truth and to apply it to human disposition and conduct.

This understanding we gain doesn’t come from our own minds, or even immense studying, but by the Son of God through His Holy Spirit. Jesus allows us to understand Him our firm foundation as the true and living God.

We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true.

And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

1 John 5:20

When we get a revelation from God, He is literally giving us the Spirit of Understanding that opens our eyes to another aspect of His glory. Revelation is when God takes the scales off of our eyes, pulls back the covers and unveils another level of who He is, what He can do, or gives us knowledge of something we have been asking for.

And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

Isaiah 11:2

Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?

Psalm 86:6

My pastor always says “Praise God until you get a revelation.” Basically saying that sometimes we can praise God because someone says to, and not from a place of understanding of His love, glory, or great power.

One story that I believe depicts this is in Nehemiah chapter 8 and it is the story of when Ezra brought out the Book of the Law of Moses to the people and read from morning to noon, praising God and ensuring that everyone not just listened but understood it as well.

The reverence, and the joy they had because they understood what was spoken moves me so much. The people were even moved to tears because they understood their own sin while hearing the Words from God. Yet, they rejoiced in the One who is their strength. While they were leaving, they celebrated because that is how joyful they were in hearing and understanding the Word of God.

They read from the Book of the Law of God and clearly explained the meaning of what was being read,
helping the people understand each passage.
Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were interpreting for the people said to them, “Don’t mourn or weep on such a day as this! For today is a sacred day before the Lord your God.” For the people had all been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!”
And the Levites, too, quieted the people, telling them, “Hush! Don’t weep! For this is a sacred day.”
So the people went away to eat and drink at a festive meal, to share gifts of food, and to celebrate with great joy because they had heard God’s words and understood them.

Nehemiah 8:8-12 NLT

Grasp the understanding that moves you to rejoice in God again. If you are feeling spiritually weak, ask God to revive you with a new level of discernment of what the Lord is saying through the Word. Keep seeking God and keep knocking on His door, and the doors of understanding shall be opened to you.
