“Tell me about yourself.” 4 dreaded words when you’re meeting someone new.
Is your first reaction to say your occupation? Your nationality? Your level of education? Your relationship status? Or that you’re a parent?
When people ask who I am, I usually start with saying my name, random things about me, my family, my education, my career and then maybe I will say I love God.
….but is God not the one who blessed me with all the former?! Yes, you may be these things; an engineer, a nurse, or a mother of 5 children, but your identity should first be rooted in Christ.
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.
John 15:5 NKJV

On the surface David was just an ordinary boy.
Occupation: Shepherd. Youngest of 8.
But that didn’t stop him!
God may call you to places that are beyond what the world, or what you have defined yourself as.
Will you take the call? Or are you going to stick to your script?
Meditate on this: David went armor-less whilst this giant had on full armor, weapons, AND a shield-bearer before him.
Read 1 samuel 17
He was going two against one. Little did Goliath know that David called on the God of Angel Armies. (Lord of Hosts)
This means David wasn’t alone. Not only was God there, but His Angels were too.
David stood in his identity as God’s chosen, in the God that can never fail,
and the God who keeps His promises.
The moment you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, your identity changed.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.
Walk as children of light.
Ephesians 5:8 NKJV
Notice here, the words ‘were‘ and ‘are‘. Past and present.
The second you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, these promises were made available to you:
- You are the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21)
- You have authority over the enemy in Jesus name (Luke 10:19)
- You are chosen by God (1 Peter 2:9)
- You are wonderfully complex (Psalm 139:14 NLT)
- You are joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17 NKJV)
Notice also the pattern in Eph. 5:8 goes: once you were, now you are, so you should. We see this pattern a lot in the Bible…
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
1 Corinthians 13:11 KJV
When you start to believe the truth of God’s word, what He defines you as, your life starts to look differently. You start to put away childish things and even stand against giants in the name of the Lord.
You won’t listen to people like David’s brother in 1 Samuel 17:28 who called him proud for standing up against Goliath.
You won’t be offended at the scoff of people who look down on you like Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:42.
If you find yourself struggling with your identity as a believer, may I suggest to start some introspective journaling with God. God searches our hearts and knows things we don’t. Let Him lead you as you identify the lies that are deeply embedded in you, uproot and give them to Him as you receive all that He’s called you to be in Him.
identify your identity.
- Identify the lies that you are telling yourself, that you believed about yourself, and the ones the enemy has been speaking to you.
- Write them out and replace them with a Scripture that debunks the lies!
- Here is a great resource: 50+ Promises of God.
- Example: If you often say: “I could never do that”, replace it with Phil. 4:13 ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’
- Identify the cycles that are delaying you, or full on stopping you to be all that God has called you to be.
- Example: You’re always scared to apply to certain jobs or schools because you’re not sure if you will excel there, or it’s “out of your reach”.
- Maybe you were rejected at something you really wanted in the past, and this is still holding you back.
- Remember, you serve a God who can do what is impossible in your own strength. Lean on Him and His understanding!
- Example: You’re always scared to apply to certain jobs or schools because you’re not sure if you will excel there, or it’s “out of your reach”.
